The Central Statistics Office (CSO) has reported a decrease in domestic milk intake by milk processors and co-ops, with a total of 1.03 billion litres in June 2024, marking a 25.4 million litre decrease from June 2022. This decline is part of a larger trend, with milk intake falling each month since January 2024, totaling 4.35 billion litres for the first half of 2024, a decrease of 242.6 million litres compared to the same period in 2023. Despite this, the fat and protein content of milk slightly increased, and butter production saw an increase of 800t, while skimmed milk powder production decreased by 1,700t.
