The Central Tuber Research Institute in Thiruvananthapuram has successfully demonstrated new high yielding and pest-resistant varieties of Cassava and Chinese potato in two villages. The 'Sree Reksha' cassava variety, which gives a yield of 45 tonnes per hectare and resists cassava mosaic disease, was planted in five farmers' ranches. The Chinese potato variety, which gives a 50% higher yield than the local variety, was planted in the fields of eight farmers. Both varieties have received a positive response from farmers and planting materials and customized fertilizers have been distributed to more farmers. Scientists have emphasized the importance of scientific cultivation, post-harvest processing, and marketing techniques for profitability.
