Cuba is starting its sugarcane harvest season with a call from President Miguel Díaz-Canel for more sustainable production practices. The country saw its lowest sugar production in over a century in the 2021-2022 campaign, producing around 480 thousand tons of sugar. This year, only 23 efficient sugar mills will be in operation to produce sugar and by-products for the local economy and for export. The national sugar industry is promised support for biotechnology and agroecological practices, with a focus on planting new, high-yield sugarcane fields and diversifying crops.
