Recent studies, including one by Embrapa from 2019 to 2023, have highlighted the challenges and advancements in wheat and triticale cultivation in central Brazil, particularly in the face of water scarcity and climate change. The research identified the BRS 404 wheat cultivar as notably drought-resistant, outperforming others with up to seven more bags per hectare under drought conditions. This finding underscores the importance of selecting resilient cultivars for the increasingly arid conditions of the Cerrado region, where wheat cultivation is expanding despite environmental challenges like dry spells and heat waves. These studies emphasize the critical need for strategic cultivation practices and genetic improvement programs focused on drought tolerance to ensure sustainable wheat production in tropical climates.
