Italy is leading a group of 14 EU countries in calling for a halt on the consumption and production of cultured meat, citing health, ethical, economic, and environmental concerns. This follows Italy's law prohibiting synthetic food and feed production and marketing. The EU Agriculture and Fisheries Council is currently discussing these issues. Additionally, Coldiretti, an Italian agricultural organization, is urging European institutions to regulate lab-produced food as pharmaceutical products due to the many uncertainties associated with new food production technologies.
