The article highlights the importance of legume crops, particularly beans, chickpeas, and mungo, in the northern part of Argentina (NOA). These crops are crucial for their sustainability due to their ability to fix atmospheric nitrogen and require less water. However, their planting schedules and challenges, such as limited varietal supply, lack of herbicides, marketing issues, and health problems, are discussed. The Obispo Colombres Experimental Station (EEAOC) is leading efforts in genetic improvement and agronomic management of these crops, with a focus on disease resistance, improved quality, and increased yield. The station is also introducing new varieties from international gene banks to diversify the NOA's legume production.
