China's General Administration of Customs has added pineapples from Benin, Africa to its list of fresh fruit imports. Benin, which has 226 orchards, 2 packaging plants, and 2 fumigation treatment plants approved for export to China, aims to export 300,000 tons of pineapples annually. The pineapple industry contributes 1.2% to Benin's national GDP and 4.3% to its agricultural GDP. To prevent harmful organisms, pineapples exported to China will undergo fumigation with methyl bromide.
