(Cheongju=Yonhap News) Reporter Seong-min Lee = On the morning of the 16th, in a cabbage field in Miwon-myeon, Cheongju City, which was supposed to be a bumper harvest, the bitter cry of blaming poor harvest instead of a good harvest echoed.
Due to continuous autumn rain, the cabbage blight has spread to the point where they have to consider giving up the harvest. About 30 farmers held a gathering to overturn the fields, urging the establishment of measures for climate disasters.
Farmers affiliated with the National Federation of Farmers held a speech event before overturning cabbage and broccoli fields, saying, "Cabbage that was about to be harvested is rotting in the fields due to an unprecedentedly long autumn rainy season" and "We have been taking great care to water the cabbage even on hot August days, but seeing the cabbage being ruined without any remedy makes us feel devastated."
They continued, "Farmers are bearing the full brunt of natural disaster damage caused by abnormal weather" and "If this situation continues, farmers will have no choice but to give up farming, so measures for climate disasters need to be established promptly."
They also emphasized, "The current spread of cabbage blight should be recognized as a natural disaster caused by abnormal weather, and compensation and support measures for the damage should be established" and "With desperate hearts, we are overturning the fields, so the central and local governments need to come up with reasonable measures."
After the speech event, the tractor that was waiting on the farm road started up.
The tractor lowered the rotary and roared as it ran over a 1,000㎡ field.
A farm association official, watching the cabbage with blackened roots being uprooted, said, "Rain is forecast for this weekend, so what should we do?" and "There is no way to remedy this, no matter how much medicine we use," shaking his head.
In the Cheongju area, except for two days, it rained every day from the 2nd to the day before, and the total accumulated precipitation during this period was 111.3mm.
According to the Chungbuk Provincial Government, the reported scale of cabbage blight damage submitted in the province so far is 107 hectares in Cheongju and 66 hectares in Goesan.
