In December, Australia began its grain exports for the new season, shipping 2.22 million tonnes of wheat, over 1mt of barley, and 288,000 tonnes of canola. Combined exports of wheat, barley, and canola reached about 3.5mt, around 850,000t higher than November. Strong demand for stockfeed wheat, barley, and canola is being reported by traders, but milling wheat grades are becoming more difficult to sell. December also marked the first time in 36 months that monthly barley exports exceeded 1mt. Middle East and Asian destinations, including Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, and the UAE, imported over 550,000t of Australian barley. Despite patchy rain and unsettled weather in southern Queensland and northern NSW slowing sorghum harvesting, above average summer rains have farmers optimistic about the 2022/23 winter crop planting season. However, export demand for chickpeas remains low due to the absence of India.
