Food prices have experienced a significant increase, with dairy products, especially cheese, seeing the highest rise in the UK, according to the Office for National Statistics. The rising costs are attributed to factors such as the bovine tuberculosis pandemic, the war in Ukraine's impact on oil prices, and increased costs in energy, packaging, and transport. Consumers are responding by opting for milder cheeses over stronger ones, as reported by food labelling consultants Ashbury. Their analysis of Google Keyword Planner data shows a decrease in recipe searches for strong cheeses like Roquefort and Piquant Provolone, while Swiss cheese is the most popular. Cheddar cheese, despite its high cost, has seen a 23% uplift in searches, indicating a preference for a versatile and family-friendly cheese in challenging economic times.
