The Sicilian citrus district is taking measures to address the water emergency and its impact on the orange supply chain. The district is considering two options: desalination of groundwater and phytoremediation of wastewater. They plan to test a portable desalination plant and analyze the potential of treating wastewater through phytoremediation, in collaboration with the University of Catania and with Coca-Cola's support. Due to the drought, the harvest of Sicilian IGP oranges is expected to drop by 12%, and producers are concerned about the future and the lack of immediate financial support. They are also seeking government recognition and operation of Agricat, the national mutual fund for damages caused by extreme weather, and are requesting a meeting with the Ministry of Agriculture to discuss these issues.
