The International Center for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas (ICARDA), the National Institute for Agricultural Research, and the Benchaib Seed Company have developed six new varieties of durum wheat and barley that are more drought-tolerant. These varieties, which include Nasheet, Jabal, Jawaher, Shifaa, Asiya, and Khanta, were developed over ten years and have been tested in Morocco for several years. They are expected to provide better yield and important nutritional properties. These new varieties are a result of using the genetic resources of the original grains, which have remained steady for thousands of years without human intervention. These centers aim to strengthen food sovereignty and enhance food and water security through sustainable management of natural resources.
