[Reporter Jo Young-kyu of the Korea Farmers' News] The Rural Development Administration's Institute of Agricultural Science and Technology Evaluation and Planning is attracting attention for developing a new variety of tomatoes resistant to Tomato Yellow Leaf Curl Virus (TYLCV). Recently, due to climate change, the population of whiteflies, which transmit TYLCV, has increased rapidly. This has led to the spread of damage in tomato cultivation areas worldwide, including domestically, and especially as mutant viruses emerge, the difficulties faced by tomato-growing farmers are increasing. The reason the Institute supported the research on "breeding new varieties of virus-resistant tomatoes using digital breeding technology" through the "Digital Breeding Technology Conversion Technology Development Project" from 2022 is due to this.
