The EU Commission has proposed regulations to sustainable manage fish stocks, including a first step towards a sustainable eel population by implementing a flexible six-month closed season for eel fishing, with a fixed EU-wide closed season of three months. The final decision was supported by Germany and other member states. Additionally, the regulations limit the catching of glass eels for human consumption and allow for continued eel stocking measures for resettlement. The North Sea stocks, including herring, cod, and pollack, will also benefit from these negotiations, with quotas agreed based on scientific recommendations.
