Brazil has seen a surge in bean consumption during the quarantine, due to its protein content and resource efficiency. The country produced 2,929 thousand tons of beans in 2019, primarily in Paraná, Minas Gerais, Goiás and Mato Grosso. The preferred beans are carioca and black, with production increased by new technologies. The Agronomic Institute (IAC) has been improving carioca beans since the 1960s and has licensed these seeds to seed producers. The institute is now also focusing on diversifying its bean technology portfolio to cater to both domestic and foreign markets.
