The Dominican Republic's local pork production has been severely impacted by African Swine Fever (ASF), leading to a surge in pork and pork product exports from the U.S. In 2023, U.S. exports to the Dominican Republic reached a record high of 96,010 metric tons. The situation, which began in July 2021, has resulted in the loss of 210,000 pigs, or 30% of the country's hog population, and has led to the slaughter of over 210,111 pigs as of September 2024, with compensation totaling $28.4 million. Despite the implementation of additional measures and an effective vaccine trial, the USDA does not anticipate eradication of ASF and instead focuses on maintaining a low prevalence through increased biocontainment and biosecurity measures.
