Between January and June of 2024, the Dominican Republic experienced a slight increase in local pork production by 1%, despite a significant decline due to African Swine Fever (ASF) outbreaks. The country's pork market is dominated by two major associations, ADOGRANJA and FEDOPORC, which account for about 70% of the production, and small-scale farmers who contribute the rest. However, pork imports have surged since 2021, hitting a record 101,324 MT in 2023, with the United States being the primary supplier and Brazil's exports showing a notable increase in the first half of 2024. This surge in imports, coupled with the decline in local production, has led to a steady rise in pork prices, prompting the Dominican authorities to attempt price stabilization through increasing imports and implementing a pledge program aimed at providing financial support to producers.
