Bolivia's National Statistics Office reported a decrease in potato production and yield from 2020 to 2021, with the largest production occurring in 2019 at over 1.31 million tons. Cochabamba and La Paz provinces are the primary potato-producing areas, with Cochabamba's Morrochata region having over 100 native potato varieties and facing an 80% loss in 2022 and 2023 due to adverse weather conditions. High costs and dry climate have led to minimal estimated returns for 2022, and the Bolivian Helvetas Foundation is implementing a project to assist native potato growers in Cochabamba in increasing resilience, income, and market entry, addressing challenges such as low income, loss of biodiversity, and low added value of native potatoes.
