The Covid-19 pandemic has negatively impacted the sales and exports of prickly pear in Mexico, with a 30% decrease in the past four months. Producers are seeking a revaluation of the fruit, which is more highly valued internationally due to its nutritional properties. Omar Carpio Flores, the national president of the Mexican Union of Producers of Nopal, Tuna and Maguey, has called on agricultural authorities to include prickly pear in a promotion program. The industry has invested in certification and technification to meet export standards, but has not received significant government support.
