The East Africa Rice Conference (EARC) 2021 brought together stakeholders to discuss the development of the regional rice sector in East Africa. The conference highlighted the need for increased availability and access to quality inputs, public-private partnerships, and regional trade in local rice to champion an integrated rice sector development. The United States Department of Agriculture projects that SSA imports will increase to 15.4 million tons by 2026, providing a significant opportunity for farmers in the region. The CARD initiative is facilitating the development of the second national rice development strategy (NRDS2) of CARD member countries to address food security and boost economies. The outcomes of the conference will be shared with stakeholders and fed into local and global agri-food systems transformation dialogues and recommendations.
