Chinese fishing fleets are causing ecological and economic disruption in South American waters, depleting fish stocks and impacting local economies. The fleets, which operate year-round off the coasts of Argentina, Chile, Peru, and Ecuador, have been involved in altercations, including a 2017 incident involving the capture of a freighter with over 6,000 sharks in a marine reserve. Despite Beijing's promises to restrict these activities, the operations remain unclear. Currently, around 350 Chinese vessels are traversing through the exclusive economic zones and marine protected areas of Chile and Argentina, disrupting the local food chain. While no illegal fishing has been reported in Chile, authorities are maintaining constant vigilance.
