In the first nine months of 2020, Ecuador surpassed India to become the world's leading frozen shrimp exporter, with a 6% increase in exports reaching 499 thousand tons. Despite this, India remains the largest shrimp exporter by value, with exports from January to October 2020 totaling $3.5 billion, a 11% decrease from the previous year. The COVID-19 pandemic has negatively affected India's shrimp markets and transport, resulting in a 13% decrease in exports to 413 thousand tons. However, India's shrimp output rose in the period January to September 2020 when exporting to Japan and Vietnam. On the other hand, Ecuador's exports experienced a rebound in October 2020, reaching the second highest level in history, despite a drop in shrimp prices due to the pandemic.
