Egypt continues to push US out of EU yam market

Egypt in the 2022/23 season will set a new record for sweet potato exports to the EU market. Over the past six seasons, Egyptian sweet potato exporters have been able to increase their exports to the EU-27 by at least 14 times, gradually squeezing their main competitors out of this market, according to EastFruit. Back in the 2017/18 season, Egypt supplied only 5.3 thousand tons of sweet potato to the EU countries, and the peak of exports fell mainly in August-December. Since then, the supply volumes have increased annually by 69%, and in the first 11 months of the 2022/23 season (July-May) they have already reached 74.2 thousand tons. In addition, the period of Egyptian exports to the EU-27 has significantly expanded and now lasts almost all year round, although the highest volumes are still exported in September-March.
