The Egyptian government is contemplating a move to reduce wheat imports by half a million tons by introducing dried white sweet potato in the subsidized bread dough. The Ministry of Supply and Internal Trade is also looking into increasing the flour extraction rate from wheat. The ministry has received 3.920 million tons of local wheat so far this year, with deliveries expected to continue until August. In response to the global food crisis, wheat prices have surged, leading the Egyptian General Authority for Supply Commodities to purchase 465,000 tons of wheat from Russia, Romania, and Bulgaria.
