A recent report from the Egyptian Agricultural Quarantine reveals that onion exports rank third among Egypt's total agricultural exports, with a total of 280,498 tons from January 1, 2022, to August 24, 2022. These exports are distributed to over 30 European and Arab countries, both fresh and dried. The cultivation area for onions spans 228 thousand feddans with an annual production of 3 million tons, positioning Egypt as the fourth-largest global producer. The Onion Research Department at the Field Crops Research Institute is actively developing new onion varieties that are disease and pest resistant, suitable for saline lands, and capable of drought endurance to adapt to environmental stresses and climate change. Onions are not only a significant crop for their economic value but also for their nutritional and medicinal properties, making them a staple in both food and medical applications since ancient times.
