It is understood that the market price of 1000 Myanmar kyat per bundle is far below the farmers' planting costs, and with low purchasing power and large inventory, growers are suffering losses.
A Mu-Gak-U onion trader said that by the end of next month, the onion season will essentially be over. Since the onions were first put on the market, the price per bundle has never exceeded 1500 Myanmar kyat. Given the high planting costs, transportation costs, and labor costs, growers have basically made no profit. Some traders also bought onions at 1300-1400 Myanmar kyat per bundle, stockpiling them in warehouses, hoping prices would rise, but now selling at 1100 Myanmar kyat per bundle is considered high, leaving these traders in a loss-making situation as well.
On September 20, over 30,000 tons of onions entered the Mu-Gak-U onion market, with small onions priced at 300-500 Myanmar kyat, medium-large onions at 600-800 Myanmar kyat, and large onions at 900-1100 Myanmar kyat.
Rainy season onions, which entered the market at the beginning of 2025, were priced at 3300 Myanmar kyat per bundle, while the currently selling hot season onions are priced at only 1500 Myanmar kyat per bundle.
Moreover, in the Kyaukpyu area of Magway Division, due to inconvenient transportation, the willingness of onion traders to purchase has significantly decreased, leading to large-scale rotting and spoilage of locally produced onions.
A local farmer said, "Initially, we hoped to sell smoothly during the Thingyan festival, but now there is no hope at all, and everything will rot. Due to the inability to systematically use agricultural chemicals, the rotting has accelerated, and now we can only discard everything."
Farmers revealed that currently, most growers are returning thousands of tons of rotten onions to the fields as compost.
It is understood that since 2021, agricultural production activities in this region, which primarily grows onions, have been continuously unstable, causing local farmers to face multiple difficulties.
