Thailand's annual coconut demand is 1.1 million tons, but it only produces 800,000 tons. In 2019, it imported 54% of its requirements under the WTO framework, totaling 112,130 tons, marking a 43% decrease from 2018. This decrease is due to the delay in approval to import coconuts under the AFTA framework and the mislabeling of Indonesian coconuts as Thai products. The article also highlights concerns about monkeys being used to collect coconuts for milk in Koh Samui, Surat Thani province, and only 10% of the collected coconuts are actually being used in Thailand, with the rest being exported.
