The Fédération Equestre Internationale (FEI) has announced an outbreak of equine herpesvirus-1 (EHV-1) in France, linked to a national event in Le Mans in November 2024. The virus can cause respiratory and neurological problems, abortion in pregnant mares, and death in young foals, and is easily transmissible through the air or direct contact. The FEI's Veterinary Department has issued prevention recommendations and has advised the equestrian community to keep horse-to-horse contact to a minimum and avoid participating in training events or breeding activities to prevent further spread.
