In the period from November 2023 to May 2024, Paraguay reported numerous suspicions of equine encephalomyelitis, a disease usually transmitted from birds to mosquitoes and then to horses and humans, in several departments, especially the Eastern region. However, all suspected cases tested negative for the disease, despite comprehensive analyses and significant efforts in training and awareness-raising about the disease. The country has remained free from the disease, with no confirmed cases reported. The situation was discussed during the 11th Ordinary Meeting of the Animal Health Commission in June 2024, where concerns about the disease's spread in the region, with Argentina and Uruguay reporting positive cases, were highlighted.
