Addis Abeba is facing a severe sugar shortage with the city receiving only half of the allocated quota in the past four months. The Trade Bureau and the Ministry of Trade and Regional Integration have confirmed the shortage, blaming a lack of government subsidized sugar supply. To address the issue, the ministry plans to discuss with sugar importers and expects 200, 000 tons of sugar to arrive in Ethiopia by mid-January. The ongoing shortage is linked to the lack of progress in privatizing Ethiopia's sugar factories, as announced in November 2019.
