In the first quarter of 2021, EU imports of canned tuna decreased by 17% to 109,780 tons compared to the same period in 2020, and remained lower than two years prior. Despite the decrease in volume, the average CFR price increased by 1%. The decline is due to high retailer and importer inventories and the crisis in the food service, restaurant, and tourism sectors. Spain experienced the largest decrease in imports, followed by Germany and other producing countries like Italy, France, and Portugal. The Netherlands has emerged as the leading importer of canned tuna in the EU, acting as a storage and distribution hub.
