EU tomato production is projected to decrease at a rate of -0.4% per year until 2031, primarily due to a reduction in winter cultivation in Spain and a shift to higher-value smaller tomato varieties. The decrease in peach and nectarine production is also expected to continue. In contrast, apple production is anticipated to remain stable at 11.1 million tonnes until 2031, due to a reduction in cultivation area and increased yields. The consumption of fresh fruit in the EU is expected to rise due to a dietary trend towards more fruit and vegetables, while consumption of processed fruit products is expected to fall.
