(Jeju=Yonhap News) Reporter Go Seong-sik = The Jeju Agricultural Technology Institute announced on the 6th that the new variety of vegetable soybean 'Haechan' received positive evaluations in on-farm verification sites for its early maturity and suitability for mechanical harvesting.
Haechan is a new variety of vegetable soybean developed jointly by the Jeju Agricultural Technology Institute and the National Institute of Crop Science from 2021 to 2023.
Test cultivation has been conducted on 0.9 hectares last year and 3.5 hectares this year.
In the field evaluation meeting held on the 28th and 30th of last month in Hanyeong-myeon, Andeok-myeon, and Gujwa-eup, it was found that Haechan matures early and allows for stable harvesting even under abnormal weather conditions such as high temperatures and autumnal rains.
Additionally, the first pods grow at a high position and are resistant to falling, making it suitable for mechanical harvesting. The evaluation scores were 93 points for mechanization suitability, 93 points for the need for supply expansion, and 90 points for maturity.
The Agricultural Technology Institute plans to create a cultivation manual for Haechan based on the results of this year's on-farm verification and research by production stage, and next year, it will push for the establishment of a 20-hectare demonstration area in the western region to gradually expand the cultivation area.
As of 2024, the Jeju region is a major production area for vegetable soybeans, with a cultivation area of 4,863 hectares and a production volume of 5,100 tons, accounting for 80% of the national production.
However, the 'Pungsannamul soybean', which is mainly cultivated, matures early but has low pod growth and is susceptible to falling, resulting in high loss rates during mechanical harvesting. Another variety, 'Aram', has a late maturity and is prone to diseases and pests due to frequent rainfall, as well as damage from sprouting (subala).
