(Jeongseon=Yonhap News) Reporter Park Young-seo = Gangwon Jeongseon County announced on the 21st that it is fully pushing forward the 'Summer Cabbage Stable Production System Establishment Pilot Project' in semi-cool zones to ensure stable cabbage production even during the summer heat.
This initiative was established to expand the cultivation area to semi-cool zones and apply cultivation techniques that can withstand high temperatures, as summer cabbage cultivation, which was centered around cool zones, has become difficult due to climate change and the occurrence of diseases and pests.
Although the demand for summer cabbage is steady, production is decreasing.
To stabilize the supply base and increase farmers' income, a total of 220 million won, including government funds, is being invested to cultivate heat-resistant varieties on a 20,000 square meter area in Yeoyang-myeon.
The county has applied techniques such as low-temperature films to lower ground surface temperature, micro-irrigation devices, and deep soil tillage to allow crop roots to extend deeply.
The pilot-cultivated cabbage is expected to be harvested around mid-September.
The production volume is estimated to be about 100 tons.
The county expects this project to stabilize the supply and demand of summer cabbage and increase farmers' income by 20%.
The county also plans to analyze the results of the pilot project in detail to confirm the feasibility of summer cabbage cultivation in semi-cool zones and to expand it to other regions in the future.
Lee Kyung-cheon, Director of the Agricultural Technology Center, said, "We will not spare any support to expand the production base of summer cabbage in semi-cool zones that can cope with climate change proactively and ensure stable supply and demand of cabbage and increase farmers' income."
