Due to a decrease in Spanish garlic production and poor quality in France and Italy, the price of domestic garlic in Hungary has increased, reaching around HUF 2,000 per kilo in stores. This shortage is also affecting the rest of Europe, with the usual reliance on Chinese garlic disrupted due to navigation issues. South American garlic is expected to arrive in Europe in mid-January, but at a higher price, and the main season for Egyptian garlic exports to the EU will be from February to the end of May. It remains to be seen if local producers will switch to other crops, and Turkey's garlic production is also becoming a factor to watch in the future.
