The poultry industry in the United States is on high alert due to concerns of a bird flu outbreak similar to the one in 2015, where 50 million birds died across 15 states and cost the government nearly $1 billion. Plans are in place to act faster and prevent the spread of the potentially deadly virus, with increased biosecurity measures and quarantine zones. The current strain of the virus, H5N1, has been identified in wild birds in several states, raising concerns of potential impacts on commercial poultry. While no human cases of the infection have been reported in the USA, the industry fears potential price hikes and availability issues if a large-scale outbreak occurs. The USDA is working closely with the poultry industry to implement safeguards and a 14-point biosafety plan to prevent and manage the outbreak, with regular audits and reviews. Producers are encouraged to have an updated biosafety protocol to be eligible for government compensation in case of an outbreak.
