(Jeju=Yonhap News) Jeon Ji-hye, Reporter = Cultivation of the new broccoli variety 'Samdagreen' suitable for Jeju, a major broccoli production area, will be expanded.

Jeju Agricultural Research Institute announced on the 26th that it will fully expand the cultivation of the new broccoli variety Samdagreen, which has high yield potential, strong disease resistance, and is well-suited to Jeju's climate.

Jeju accounts for approximately 70% of the nation's broccoli cultivation area. In particular, winter cultivation from January to February, which is difficult to produce in other regions, is the main focus.

However, since domestic seed companies have not developed varieties suitable for winter cultivation, 99% of seeds are dependent on overseas sources, costing around 2 billion won annually in seed purchases, with limited variety options.

The Agricultural Research Institute developed Samdagreen in 2022, suitable for winter cultivation in the Jeju region, and in 2023, conducted a demonstration test with 50 farms in the province in cooperation with the Broccoli Producers Association to promote the new variety and confirm field responses.

The demonstration results showed that Samdagreen is resistant to major broccoli diseases like black spot, has an excellent shape, is firm with high commercial value, and is strong in low temperatures, making it suitable for winter cultivation.

76.8% of the participating farms responded that they are 'willing to replant or considering' the variety.

The Agricultural Research Institute transferred the seed production and sales non-exclusive rights to a seed company to expand Samdagreen farm supply, and last year's cultivation area reached 47 hectares.

This year, they expect to secure about twice the seeds compared to last year, which will be sufficient to meet increasing seed demand.

An official from the Agricultural Research Institute stated, "In line with the expanding Samdagreen cultivation trend, we will strengthen field support through customized cultivation technology education and manual distribution to ensure stable field establishment."
