In 2022, Russia emerged as the fourth largest fish producing country globally, with a market share of 5.4%, as per FAO estimates. The country's fishermen caught a record 5.36 million tons in 2023, contributing to Russia's status as one of the leading fish product exporters, despite a slight drop in exports to $5.8 billion. Russia is a major supplier of pollock, herring, Pacific salmon, cod, and premium crab. Despite challenges, including anti-Russian sanctions, the country is expected to maintain its leading position in the fish market. Consumption of fish in Russia has surged by 22% in 2023, while pork and poultry consumption has declined, with the growth driven by new production technologies and a wider range of Ready-to-Eat and Ready-to-Cook products. The government's support could further boost the domestic fish market by improving logistics and creating modern warehouses for fish storage.
