Senator José Narro Céspedes has urged Mexico's Federal Commission for the Protection against Sanitary Risks (Cofepris) to facilitate exports of "cannon ball" jellyfish to China, and to expedite administrative procedures for this species' export. This comes as a response to the shrimp embargo and the decline in other fisheries. The jellyfish, also known as "aguamala," has been a new source of job creation in Mexico, particularly in Sonora, with 2,800 direct and 4,000 indirect jobs generated in the past three years. The senator emphasized the potential of the jellyfish industry to expand in Asia, the United States, and Europe, if the necessary health certifications and origin verifications are in place.
