The European Commission's Directorate-General for Agriculture and Rural Development (DG Agri) has reported a 17% increase in the EU's agri-food trade surplus, reaching 22.7 billion euros. Despite a 7.7% drop in exports in April 2021 compared to March, they were still 9.8% higher than in the same period of the previous year. The UK, US, China, Switzerland, and Russia were the top five countries receiving EU agricultural exports, which made up 51% of total sales. There was a notable increase in exports to China, and a decrease in exports to Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Japan, and Egypt. The largest growth in product categories was seen in wine, spirits and liqueurs, pork, rapeseed and sunflower oil, bulbs, roots, and living plants, while the largest declines were in wheat, infant nutrition, butter, fresh and chilled vegetables, and poultry.
