The Atacama region in Chile experienced a 13% growth in exports in the first half of 2020, reaching over USD 2,131 million and showing a positive surplus of 262 million. China was the primary importer, receiving 51% of the exports, which were mainly mining products. Despite this, agricultural exports, including seafood, also saw growth, with demand for fishmeal and fish oil increasing due to the need for Omega acids. In 2019, the region exported USD 182 million worth of food products. Undersecretary Rodrigo Yáñez has emphasized the importance of further internationalization and market access for these sectors to support economic recovery.
