Kenya's avocado exports to China plummeted by 82% to US$1.23 million from January to July compared to the previous year, primarily due to poor quality and negative market feedback, resulting in a 'reputation crisis.' Additionally, low avocado consumption in China has dampened demand. Despite the potential of the Chinese market, the EU remains the main destination for Kenyan avocados, with exports nearly 15 times higher than to China. A global decline in avocado production in countries like Peru and Mexico has opened more opportunities for Kenyan traders in Europe. Nicholas Ng'ang'a, chairman of Kakuzi PLC, highlighted the need to develop markets in China, India, and the Middle East for future growth.
