'Fake biochar' must be eradicated from the root

[Korean Farmers' Newspaper] Amidst the support for biochar to achieve carbon neutrality in agriculture, the issue of fake biochar has emerged. This undermines the trust in biochar and deceives farmers who expect carbon neutrality practices and improved crop growth, raising concerns about the seriousness of the situation. Biochar is manufactured by thermally decomposing agricultural and forestry by-products or livestock manure at 350°C with limited oxygen. It is known to have soil improvement effects along with carbon sequestration when applied to agricultural machinery. It is also considered a promising alternative for solving waste problems through upcycling. The government and local governments are also promoting biochar support as a key project for carbon neutrality in agriculture.
