The Falkland Islands have reported high catches of Loligo squid and hake for the fifth year in a row, with a total catch of 53,578 tons and 16,190 tons respectively. However, the Illex catch was reported as 'modest' at 45,452 tons. Dr. Andrea Clausen credited the sustainable management measures in place for the high catches. There has been a 50% reduction in marine mammal deaths and a 74% reduction in seabird deaths compared to last year. Discussions are ongoing about the allocation of Vessel Units and the potential inclusion of Illex in the ITQ system. The Director of Natural Resources also mentioned the development of a system of administrative penalties for license breaches.
