The almond production forecasts in Spain have been reduced due to drought and heat waves, with some areas experiencing up to a 15% decline. The initial production estimate has been revised down from 122,304 tonnes to less than 100,000 tonnes. The reduced yields and high production costs, currently estimated at over 4 euros/kilogram in dry, low-slope lands, contrast with prices at source that are around 3.20 euros/kg. The lack of rain is also affecting the development and size of the almonds. The almond campaign has started in several areas and may see further acceleration due to higher altitude areas completing their harvest earlier. In recent years, Spain's last almond campaign saw a decrease in production, while imports have increased.
