A report by AHDB predicts a decrease in beef production by 3.1% this year and an additional 1% drop in 2024. Per capita beef consumption is also expected to decrease by 3.5% this year. High domestic prices are anticipated to impact trade, making exports less competitive in international markets, but the EU may see an increase in beef imports by 2024. Sheep and goat meat production is projected to decrease by 1.8% this year, with a 1% decline estimated for next year. Sheep meat consumption, however, is expected to remain relatively stable in 2023 due to consumption during religious events, while exports are anticipated to decline by 10% compared to last year. Import of sheep meat is forecasted to increase by 10% in 2023, driven by New Zealand's competitive production and prices.
