FAO: Forecasts of world grain production in 2023 reach 2,819 million tons

Global wheat production in 2023 is forecast at 785.1 million tons, virtually unchanged from the previous month but 2.2% (18 million tons) lower than in 2022. Production forecast at The European Union and Kazakhstan fell, as persistent adverse weather late in the season led to lower output than previously forecast. In contrast, output forecasts in Iraq and the US increased. Global coarse grain production in 2023 is pegged at 1,510 million tonnes, unchanged from last month's forecast but up 2.7% (38.8 million tonnes) from last year. Of which, output in China is forecast to increase by 4 million tons due to increased planting area. Production forecasts for most West African countries are also in line with recently released official data. In contrast, corn and sorghum yields are forecast to decline in the US, amid persistent unfavorable weather, and in the European Union, corn yields have fallen due to dry conditions in the eastern regions.
