Asaja Almería, through its president Adoración Blanque, has submitted a request to the General Secretariat of Water of the Junta de Andalucía, asking that it elevate to the Ministry of Ecological Transition (Miteco) a petition to implement the necessary mechanisms to allow for the cost of desalinated water from the Mar de Alborán desalination plant to be subsidized for farmers who require it. The objective is to make the price equal to that set for water produced in the Carboneras desalination plant, which is established at 0.45 euros/cubic meters. The petition, presented by Asaja last September, is based on the "general interest" nature of this infrastructure to guarantee irrigation in the area of influence of the Mar de Alborán desalination plant, which includes the Níjar field, in a context of prolonged meteorological drought and overexploitation of the Campo de Níjar aquifer.
