Egypt: Tomato prices have fallen by more than 50% as we expected, says the head of the Farmers Syndicate

Hussein Abdel Rahman Abu Saddam, agricultural expert and head of the Farmers Syndicate, said that the prices of tomatoes and potatoes, as we expected, have decreased by more than 50% compared to their prices in the previous days, noting that the prices of a kilo of tomatoes range between 3 and 5 pounds in the field, while the prices of a kilo of potatoes range between 8 and 10 pounds on his land. Abdel Rahman added that the main reason for the decrease in the prices of tomatoes and potatoes is the abundance of supply with the decrease in demand; as the winter crop of tomatoes and potatoes has begun to be offered in the markets, and its area has increased compared to its counterparts in the previous season, in addition to the increase in productivity due to the moderate climate, and the tendency of farmers to grow advanced varieties with high productivity that are compatible with climate changes and are resistant to diseases.
