Ecuador's banana exports from January to September 2022 decreased by 8.98% compared to the same period in 2021, according to the Association of Marketing and Export of Ecuador (Acorbanec). This decline is due to a reduction in shipments to key markets such as the European Union and the United States by 16.04% and 12.6% respectively. Other markets like East Asia, Eastern Europe, and Africa also saw a decrease in imports. The drop is attributed to lower production due to adverse weather conditions and a lack of maintenance, as well as logistical issues such as a lack of containers and shipping spaces at the beginning of the year. The ongoing conflict in Russia has also impacted banana consumption in that country.
